What if you aren’t A Genius but rather you Have A Genius?
Maybe this is the explanation for a Genius that seems to go AWOL from time to time and usually at the most inopportune time.
It seems to me that Genius is a contrary character – sometimes it just sits around watching what your commitment to your art looks like and doesn’t come to your assistance until it feels like you are worthy of it.
When Genius decides to collaborate, you feel like you are in the flow, guided, creating beyond your unassisted state. The thing is – you must continue to work, to create your art, with or without the assistance of Genius. Persevere and be eternally grateful for assistance when and if it is offered up.
According to Einstein – Genius is 1% talent and 99% hard work – so, 99% of the time you will be working unassisted!
I was introduced to the concept of the external genius by Elizabeth Gilbert in her book, Big Magic. It resonated with me – you see Genius had decided not to co-operate with me recently. I imagined Genius taking a seated position, arms crossed, big frown, petulant look, not giving any clues as to what I needed to do to get its attention.
I know now that Genius was waiting for me to reconnect wholeheartedly with my art. I know this because when I got serious, Genius jumped out of the corner and came to my aide!
